Stage Name: Kangta (강타) Birth Name: Ahn Chil Hyun (안칠현) Birthday: October 10, 1979 Hometown: Seoul, South Korea Nationality: Korean Debut: July 9, 1996 Kangta is a former member of the Kpop boy band H.O.T and a current solo artist signed under SM Entertainment. Kangta was discovered at Lotte World at the age of 13. After about four years of training under SM Entertainment, Kangta debuted as a member of H.O.T (High Five of Teenagers) in 1996. The group became the most popular in Korean history, amassing fans all over the country and becoming the first ever Korean act to sell more than a million albums. H.O.T is largely credited for paving the way for future male idol groups like BIGBANG, Super Junior, and EXO. The group is also known for having intense fans that created the sort of fan culture that is standard in Kpop today -- fans slept outside of the members homes, causing them to move every few months due to neighbor complaints. H.O.T disbanded in 2001, and Kangta and fellow member Moon Hee Jun were offered solo contracts with SM Entertainment. Kangta released his first solo album Polaris, which was a commercial success in Korea. Following his solo debut Kangta pursued a career in acting, taking on a starring role in the Chinese drama Magic Touch of Fate. Since, Kangta has regularly taken on drama roles in both Korea and China. In 2008, he enrolled in the Korean army and completed his 21 months of mandatory service. As a solo artist he has released four full-length albums and has composed hundreds of songs, and remains signed to SM Entertainment today.
