As many know, EXID‘s sudden rocket in popularity at the end of 2014 was astounding. Desipte releasing their break-out hit “UP&DOWN” in August 2014, the song didn’t take off until December of the same year.
Much of that belated success is attributed to a specific fancam video focusing on EXID member Hani as she performed the choreography to “UP&DOWN.”
Today, that video surpassed 10 million views on YouTube, barely trailing behind the official music video for the song, which is currently sitting at 13 million views.
This level of viewership for a “fancam” is unprecedented, and even more fascinating is that this particular fancam is widely acknowledged as the catalyst for Hani and EXID’s sudden fame in the K-pop sphere. In fact, in nearly every interview that EXID does, they specifically and sincerely thank the person who uploaded the fancam to YouTube.
