EXO’s ‘Overdose’ is the Highest Selling Album of 2014

On December 29th, Gaon, Korea’s official album and singles sales chart, revealed the sales numbers and chart positions for the entire year of 2014.

EXO came out on top with the highest album sales of the year with their most recent release, “Overdose.”

In fact, SM Entertainment seems to have done rather well this year, with EXO-K taking the #1 album sales spot for “Overdose,” EXO-M clocking in at #2 with “Overdose,” Super Junior coming in at #3 with their 7th mini album “Mamacita,” TVXQ! taking the #4 spot with their album “Tense,” and Girls’ Generation coming in at #5 with their mini album “Mr. Mr.”

Gaon does not only rank album sales though, they also rank digital download sales, streaming sales, and the most sung songs at noraebang (karaoke). Here are the rankings for the highest selling songs in each of those categories:

Annual Digital Download Sales
1. “Some” — Soyu & Junggigo
2. “Eyes, Nose, Lips” — Taeyang
3. “Wildflower” — Park Hyo Shin
4. “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness” — San E & Raina
5. “Meaning of You” — IU feat. Kim Changwan

Annual Streaming Sales
1. “Some” — Soyu & Junggigo
2.  “Wildflower” — Park Hyo Shin
3. “Friday” — IU
4. “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness” — San E & Raina
5. “Eyes, Nose, Lips” — Taeyang

Most Popular at Noraebang
1. “A Shot of Soju” — Lim Changjung
2. “Wildflower” — Park Hyo Shin
3. “Eyes, Nose, Lips” — Taeyang
4. “Resignation” — Big Mama
5. “Emergency Room” — izi

It looks like while SM Entertainment groups dominated in album sales, Soyu and Junggigo, Taeyang, and Park Hyoshin dominated most of the single-based charts.

Congratulations to all of the artists listed above on a successful year, here’s looking to more great K-pop in 2015!
