She became a trainee at SM Entertainment in 2002 after passing the open casting audition. She trained vigorously at SM for five years before debuting with Girls' Generation in 2007. In addition to her group activities with Girls' Generation, Yoona has made a name for herself as an actress in Korea and in China. Her acting career began with a minor role in the MBC drama Two Outs Ninth Inning, but she had her big breakthrough when she landed a lead role in the KBS daily drama You Are My Destiny. The drama was hugely popular, achieving 41.5% viewership ratings. The role earned Yoona two major year-end acting awards, propelling her into the public eye as not just an SNSD member but as an actress. In 2009 Yoona took on the lead role in the MBC drama Cinderella Man, and in 2012 starred opposite Jang Geun Suk in Love Rain. In 2013 Yoona played the lead role in KBS2 romantic comedy drama The Prime Minister And I, and is currently starring in the new drama TheK2. In November of 2015 Yoona filmed her first movie alongside Hyun Bin, which is currently in post-production. In April of 2016, Yoona achieved immense popularity in China after starring in the Chinese historical drama God of War, Zhao Yun. The drama had a viewership of over 10 million, cementing Yoona's celebrity status in China and leading to her eventually release a solo mini album of covers of popular Chinese songs. Yoona began dating actor and singer Lee Seung Gi in September of 2013, and the couple eventually broke up in 2015 after nearly two years of dating. Yoona attended and graduated from Dongguk University with a bachelor's degree in theater studies in 2015.
