He showed an interest in singing from a young age and in 1999 competed in and won the "Cheonan Singing Competition". In 2001, Yesung's mother signed him up to audition for SM Entertainment. He successfully passed the audition and signed with the company the same year. Yesung debuted as an original member of Super Junior in 2005, and following his debut became a radio host. A year after his debut, Yesung joined forces with Kyuhyun and Ryeowook to form an R&B ballad subunit called Super Junior-K.R.Y. Then, in June 2008 Yesung became part of yet another Super Junior unit, Super Junior-H. Yesung starred in his first musical Namhansanseong in 2009, and in 2010 starred in his second, Hong Gildong. In addition to his musical theater activities Yesung also released a number of original soundtrack singles for popular Korean dramas. Yesung enlisted in the Korean army in May 2013 and completed his service in June 2015. After his discharge, Yesung joined Kyuhyun and Ryeowook for a K.R.Y. Japanese tour. In April of 2016, Yesung made his official solo debut with the release of his album Here I Am.
