In middle school, Taeyeon began training at Starlight Academy (later renamed SM Academy), commuting from Jeonju to Seoul on the weekends to receive vocal training. At age 15, Taeyeon won first place in SM Entertainment's "Best Youth Competition" and officially received a contract from the company. Taeyeon continued training under SM Entertainment, eventually debuting as a part of Girls' Generation in August of 2007. Shortly after her debut with the group, Taeyeon released two original soundtrack singles in 2008: "If" and "Can You Hear Me." Both tracks were extremely popular in Korea, and solidified Taeyeon's status as one of the most talented vocalists in Kpop. Since, she has recorded many OST singles for a number of Korean dramas. In addition to her activities as a vocalist, Taeyeon has worked in many arenas of the Korean entertainment industry. From 2008 to 2010 Taeyeon hosted a radio show, earning her the nickname "DJ Taengoo." In 2009 she starred in the popular MBC program We Got Married, where she was paired up with Jung Hyungdon to play a married couple. In 2010, Taeyeon made her musical debut with the lead role in Midnight Sun. In 2012 Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun formed a Girls' Generation vocal unit dubbed TaeTiSeo and debuted with the single "Twinkle." In 2015, Taeyeon made her highly-anticipated solo debut with the release of her first ever mini album, I. The album's title track "I" earned critical acclaim and 11 weekend music show wins for Taeyeon. The singer released a 2016 sophomore album entitled "Why," and followed it up with a nationwide solo concert -- Butterfly Kiss -- in Seoul and Busan. In 2014, Korean paparazzi released pictures of Taeyeon on a date with EXO member Baekhyun. Shortly after the pictures were released, SM Entertainment confirmed that the two were indeed dating. In 2015 it was officially announced that the two had separated amicably.
