Leeteuk was recruited by an SM Entertainment talent scout while shopping in Korea's Myeongdong district. After several test recordings and auditions, he was accepted into the company and became a trainee. Initially, Leeteuk was supposed to debut in a group called "Smile" alongside Donghae, but the project was eventually dropped and both were inserted into the soon-to-debut group Super Junior. As the eldest trainee put into the team, Leeteuk was elected leader of the group. Leeteuk debuted as a part of Super Junior in November of 2005. Over the years, Leeteuk has made a name for himself as a "variety-dol." His warm personality and quick wit quickly landed the Super Junior member multiple gigs as an event MC, radio DJ, and TV host. Leeteuk has been a regular guest/host on popular Korean TV shows including Strong Heart and Star King, and makes frequent appearances on a variety of other programs. In April 2007, Leeteuk suffered major injuries in a severe car accident. The crash happened while he, Kyuhyun, Shindong, and Eunhyuk, along with two managers were riding in a van and the left front tire burst, causing the van to crash into the guard rail, flip, and skid nearly 30 meters. Eunhyuk and Shindong suffered minor injuries, but Kyuhyun and Leeteuk were taken immediately into the hospital to be treated for severe injuries. Leeteuk had to get over 170 stitches due to the shards of glass that were embedded in his back and above his eyes. He was discharged from the hospital after 10 days of treatment. Leeteuk began his mandatory military service on October 30, 2012, and during his time there suffered a harsh family tragedy. On January 6, 2014, Leeteuk's father and grandparents were found dead in their home. SM initially stated that the deaths were caused by a car accident, but it was later uncovered that their deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, with Leeteuk's father strangling the grandparents before hanging himself. Later, it was revealed that Leeteuk's father was dealing with a serious case of depression, and that the grandparents had intense cases of dementia as well. On January 8, 2014 Leeteuk held a funeral for his parents before returning to the military on January 11 to complete his service. Leeteuk was discharged on July 29, 2014 after successfully completing his service, and is currently active once again as a TV personality and MC.
