Lay started his entertainment career as a local child star on the TV program "Star Academy" in China in 2005. After auditioning for SM Entertainment, Lay became a trainee at the company in 2008 at the age of 16. Lay was officially introduced as the sixth member of EXO in January of 2012, going on to debut with the group in April of the same year. Since his debut with EXO, Lay has appeared frequently on Chinese variety shows and performs often in his home country, becoming one of China's most popular celebrities. In April of 2015, SM Entertainment set up a satellite studio for Lay to allow him to more freely and easily promote in China. Lay has starred in multiple Chinese blockbuster movies and dramas, including "Kung Fu Yoga," "Unexpected Love," and "Ex Files 2: The Backup Strikes Back," the last of which earned over $2 billion in the box office just 10 days after its release. In September of 2015, Lay released a limited edition autobiography entitled "Standing Firm at 24," which sold over 68,000 copies less than 30 minutes after it was released online.
