Jung Yonghwa is the leader and main vocalist of Korean pop rock group CNBLUE. Yonghwa made a name for himself in the online community for being an "ulzzang," a slang term that implies one has incredibly attractive facial features. In 2010, he won the "Best Nine Ulzzang Competition" and was scouted by FNC Entertainment agent who saw pictures from the competition online.
When the FNC scout contacted him to audition, Yonghwa initially refused, claiming he had no desire to be an artist. The scout was persistent though, and showed up at Yonghwa's house to convince his parents to let him audition for FNC. Yonghwa's parents encouraged him to do so, never imagining their son -- whom they had never heard sing -- would actually pass the audition. Yonghwa of course did pass the position and officially became a trainee at FNC Entertainment. In 2009, he and his future bandmates moved temporarily to Japan to study music before making their official Korean debut in January 2010.
Since debuting with CNBLUE, Yonghwa has honed his songwriting skills and now composes or co-writes most of the group's title songs. Yonghwa has also acted in multiple popular Korean dramas, including You're Beautiful, Heartstrings, and Marry Him If You Dare. In 2010, he was coupled with Girls' Generation member Seohyun for the very popular MBC reality program We Got Married, which the two filmed as a "couple" for over a year.
In 2015, Yonghwa released his first ever solo album, One Fine Day, which rose to the #1 spot on the Billboard World Albums chart. He followed up the album release with a solo Asian tour, which sold out in five minutes. In 2016, Yonghwa was investigated for insider trading after it was revealed that he purchased nearly $350,000 worth of FNC Entertainment stocks, earning a profit of over $170,000, just before FNC signed Korea's most popular MC and comedian, Yoo Jae Suk. Yonghwa was later cleared of all charges due to the fact that his mother reportedly takes care of his finances, and made the stock purchase without his knowledge.
