In 2002 he auditioned for SM Entertainment through their then-called "Starlight Casting System". He was initially placed in a group to be called "Four Seasons" with eventual TVXQ members Jaejoong and Yunho, and eventual fellow Super Junior member Kangin. The group didn't work out, and Jaejoong and Yunho went on to debut in TVXQ in 2003, while Kangin and Heechul returned to being trainees before eventually debuting with Super Junior in 2005. Heechul reportedly shot over 300 commercials before even debuting with Super Junior, earning him a reputation as a "pretty boy" in the industry. Following his November 2005 debut Heechul began making frequent TV appearances on variety, reality, and talk shows in Korea. Heechul took on his first leading role in the drama Rainbow Romance, and had multiple cameos and supporting roles in dramas in the following years. In 2007, Heechul debuted as a part of Super Junior's trot unit Super Junior-T. In 2011, he formed a duo called "M&D" with TRAX member Jungmo. They debuted with "Close Ur Mouth", the music video of which Heechul himself directed. From September 2011 to August 2013 Heechul carried out his mandatory military service in the Korean army. Since, he has continued to make regular appearances on a wide range of Korean television shows.
