FTISLAND is a Korean pop rock group signed to FNC Entertainment. The band consists of five members: Choi Jong Joon (leader, guitar, keyboard), Lee Hong Gi (main vocals), Lee Jae Jin (bass, vocals), Choi Min Hwan (drums), and Song Seung Hyun (guitar, vocals, rap). The group’s name FTISLAND stands for “Five Treasure Island.” Song Seung Hyun replaced former member Oh Won Bin when the guitarist left the group in 2009.
FTISLAND debuted in 2007 with a full-length album entitled Cheerful Sensibility, which was exceptionally well-received by fans and the public alike. The group’s lead single “Love Sick” remained on top of Korea’s music charts for 8 consecutive weeks, and the album was the 7th best selling of 2007. The year of their debut FTISLAND also won “Best New Male Group” at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and both the “Popularity” and “Newcomer” awards at the Golden Disk Awards.
In 2008 FTISLAND debuted in Japan, but their debut album had limited success, rising only to 95th place on Japan’s Oricon Chart. It was not until the release of their Japanese single “The One” that the group’s career in Japan really began to take off.
Since their debut, all of the members of FTISLAND actively participate in the lyrical and instrumental composition of their songs. Over the course of their career, the group has released six full-length Korean albums, and seven full-length Japanese albums, and headlined 12 tours. FTISLAND was Korea’s first ever instrumental idol band, and to this day remain respected veterans and talented artists in the Kpop industry.
