Group Name: EXO (엑소) Debut: April 8, 2012 Debut Album: MAMAMembers: Xiumin, Lay, Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O, Kai, Sehun Former Members: Tao, Luhan, Kris EXO was formed under SM Entertainment in 2011, and officially debuted with 12 members in 2012. Originally, the group was divided into two subunits, EXO-K and EXO-M. The two subunits released music simultaneously, EXO-K singing and promoting in Korea while did the same EXO-M in Mandarin overseas in China. However, due to the departure of three EXO-M members (Tao, Luhan, and Kris), EXO now promotes as a full 9-member group, though they still release every album in both languages. One of today's most popular Kpop groups, EXO's career took off with the release of their hit single "Growl" on the repackaged version of their first full-length album, XOXO. The album won EXO both critical and commercial fame, with the group taking home the "Album of the Year" award for it at Korea's 28th Golden Disk Awards. The album went on to sell over 1 million copies, making EXO the highest selling artist in modern Kpop history. In May of 2014, EXO-M member Kris filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract with the company, claiming that SM had violated his basic human rights by overworking him. In October of the same year, Luhan followed suit, suing to nullify his contract with SM due to health issues and discrimination. SM announced that the group would continue with 10 members while the lawsuits took place, and EXO proceeded with promotions sans the two members. In March of 2015, EXO released their second full-length album EXODUS and once again broke 1 million in album sales, an unheard of feat in the modern music industry that earned the group the title of "double million sellers." However, pandemonium once again ensued when in April of 2015, Tao's father uploaded a post to Weibo expressing his wishes for Tao to withdraw from the group, citing lack of support from SM on Tao's individual career development and health issues. Later that month SM stated that they, along with Tao and his family, were seeking a solution through negotiation. Despite their efforts, Tao officially filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment in August of 2015, seeking to nullify his contract with the company. Since 2015, EXO has operated more or less as a single nine-member group, rather than two subunits of EXO-K and EXO-M, though they still release all of their material in both languages. In 2016 the group released their third studio album EX'ACT, which sold more than 1.1 million copies, earning EXO an all-time record and the title of "triple million sellers." Throughout their 4-year career, EXO has won more than 148 major awards for their music, held three world tours, and sold over 3 million albums. Today they are considered the modern "Kings of Kpop" and continue to release quality material as a nine member group, operating under the motto "we are one."
