Donghae is a member of the SM Entertainment boy group Super Junior. From a young age, Donghae's dream was to become a soccer player, but his father convinced him to become a singer after regretting that he himself had missed out on his dream of singing. Donghae signed with SM Entertainment after winning a prize at the SM Youth Best Contest in 2001. Originally, Donghae (along with Leeteuk) was placed into a five-member boy group called "Smile", but the idea fell through before the group debuted. Instead, Donghae debuted as a part of Super Junior in 2005.
Following his debut with the group, Donghae participated in a wide array of activities in the entertainment field. In 2011 he starred alongside Siwon in the Taiwanese drama Skip the Beat, and in 2012 starred as "Mr. Hedgehog" in the drama Ms. Panda and Mr. Hedgehog. In 2011 Donghae formed a unit with fellow Super Junior member Eunhyuk, appropriately dubbed Super Junior-D&E. The duo released their first single "Oppa, Oppa" in 2011, and the single was well-received by audiences around Asia. They returned with their first Korean album together in 2015 before embarking on a Japanese tour together.
Donghae enlisted in the Korean army in October 2015, and is currently carrying out his mandatory two years of military service.
