Group Name: BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) Debut: August 8, 2016 Debut Album: Square One Members: Rosé, Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo
BLACKPINK is YG Entertainment’s newest group. BLACKPINK’s debut was highly anticipated for years, with YG teasing the debut of a new girl group as early as 2012. As trainees, the members of BLACKPINK were active in various fields of entertainment prior to their debut. Jisoo secured multiple endorsements and made short appearances in a few dramas prior to her debut. Meanwhile, Jennie starred in G-Dragon’s “That XX” music video, and featured on his song “Black”. Rosé featured on G-Dragon’s track “Without You”, but was credited as a mystery artist. Meanwhile Lisa appeared in Taeyang’s music video for “Ringa Linga”.
After four years of releasing teasers of possible group members, YG finally solidified the BLACKPINK lineup in June 2016. The group’s name reflects their contrasting yet harmonious blend of talent and appeal, both dark and bright. BLACKPINK became the first YG girl group to debut since 2NE1 when they released their first EP, Square One in August of 2016. The EP contains two lead singles, “BOOMBAYAH” and “Whistle”.
BLACKPINK’s debut was an historic one, as they became the first ever girl group to win first place on a music show on the same day as their debut performance. The group’s single “Whistle” topped Korea’s various music charts for nearly the entire month of August. The group is set to return with their second EP, Square Two, on November 1, 2016.
